• That same year, nearly 700 children lost their lives while riding in passenger vehicles.

• For children in light trucks, the reductions are even higher — 58% for infants and 59% for toddlers.
• Since recordkeeping began, child restraints have saved thousands of young lives, including over 11,600 children under age 5.

Even with these proven benefits, not all families are using car seats correctly. A large percentage of seats are either installed improperly or used at the wrong stage for the child’s size.

Types of Child Safety Restraints

• Rear-Facing Seats – Best for infants and toddlers, offering maximum head and neck protection.
• Forward-Facing Seats – With harnesses for growing children who have outgrown rear-facing seats.
• Booster Seats – Help seat belts fit properly across older children’s shoulders and laps.
• Seat Belts – For children big enough (usually 8–12 years old) to sit with proper belt positioning.
